Acton, Massachusetts, a small town 21 miles northwest of Boston, may have a population of just 21,929, but that didn’t stop it from being voted the 16th Best Place to Live in the U.S. in 2011 by Money Magazine. This affluent suburb is the birthplace of several notable people, like actor Steve Carell and Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who performed Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.
Acton played a part in the American Revolutionary War: on October 3, 1774 the townspeople sent an angry letter to King George III stating a list of their protests and each year since, the town has celebrated Crown Resistance Day on this day. Speaking of wars, be sure to visit the historical Acton Memorial Library, which was a gift to the town’s Civil War veterans from William Allan Wilde in 1890.
