My wife and I moved across country and needed temporary storage until our condo was ready. Not being from the area, we found MiniU Storage in Springfield, VA online at www.selfstorage.com and made a reservation. We were delayed departing New Mexico, and arrived in Virginia a day late. We called from the road and we’re able to push our move-in date one day later without issue or fees. When we arrived, Ken (the manager) showed us our unit before signing any paperwork. The paperwork was quick and easy (about 15 mins). Ken’s customer service was EXCELLENT! The price was very good for a 10x25 unit and we even received 50% off our first month. This was a bonus because rent is for a full 30 days from when you move in, not prorated for the current month like some other storage places. The unit was clean, easily accessible, and there was plenty of room to maneuver our 26-foot Penske truck. Overall, this was a VERY GOOD experience!

Reasonably priced unit for small storage needs

Although the unit had been swept, there was still a lot of dust and debri in the metal trays surrounding the floor edges. So those needed to be cleaned. And there was a packed hole in one of the walls. But since only temporary storage for items not requiring climate control was required, this facility was adequate for the price. Staff also provided a 5% advertised discount that had not been requested and allowed use of cart for transferring items.

Needed a large storage unit fast

I was in from out of town to handle a death in the family and needed additional storage immediately. The call center looked up the closet storage facility that had the storage space I needed. Once I arrived at the storage facility, I was greeted and treated really well. Overall a great experience in a time I was under a lot of stress and pressure.

I didn't know that we would be forced to have insurance in Virginia for our furniture that is worth very little. Which is absolutely ridiculous, but not the fault of the woman who checked us in.

It was so simple that i was confused why sign up was too easy?

Not only did was the gentleman(i think his name was Henry?) Kind enough to help me 5 min before closing,he did it with genuine effort without rushing or giving me an attitude and made it look super easy. I was in and out faster than it took me to get a big mac at the drive thru. The second day i went there to load my belongings in my unit (also 5 minutes before close) a different employee(white guy with glasses,forgot his name awesome dude!!) I went in there to buy a lock because i told him i rented one the day before he just asked what my name was and just opened up the lock package and handed it to me and said it was on the house!! I was left mind blown and speechless the staff is the prime example of creme de la creme customer service.

Since the first day I walked in to Mini U Storage I felt like I was going to be taken care of properly. All of the employees ( I think I have met them all ) have been so helpful. I am in a tough spot in my life right now and lost my job and I am a single mother of two. So sometimes when I am there I am in a bad mood or very depressed. Every single time to no avail someone always comes by and chats with me . Before I know it I feel like I have more hope and everything will be ok. I have to come in sometimes at night which usually there is no way I would do that as a single woman but their is always security and I am not afraid at all. I have rented several storage units before and believe me when I say this - Mini U Storage is by far the best I have had the pleasure of storing my things. I selected this place for price. There are other storage facilities closer to my home. They raised the fee three months into the contract. I am a busy person so going back reviewing the contract is a time consuming task for me so I haven't reviewed the terms. Maybe it said the could raise my rent without notice.

Overall I had a pretty good experience. The management turned over while I was renting, and the new managers were definitely a step up from the prior ones; I didn't have a lot of confidence in the people who were initially there to not lose paperwork, etc. But the people who seemed to be running the show when I left were on the ball. I used the facility to store a motorcycle, and there was some hassling around with providing proof of insurance in order to avoid an extra fee (for overpriced "insurance" that wouldn't have covered my cheap, old motorcycle anyway, its maximum was so low). I had to call my insurance company and have them fax a copy of my bike's policy (the simple proof-of-insurance card wasn't sufficient) to the facility, and then I STILL got hit with the fee "accidentally" and had to call the storage facility up and have it removed. It seemed pretty sketchy to me. But as I said, that was all under the original management, and they're gone now; hopefully it will be smoother in the future. I used it for winter storage so I moved my bike out in the spring and the move-out experience was fine. Chances are I'll be back to do the same thing next winter.

The customer service I received over the phone was fantastic. When I went to the actual facility the service was below average. I was quoted one price over phone but when I paid the first months rent is was not what was agreed. WhenI questioned the price I was rudely told I was wrong that I did not know what I was talking about. I asked to see reservation n I was told no. She only would produce her paperwork from her store. They woman was extremely rude. They over charged me for boxes instead of giving me cash she credited my account.
