Cleveland Ohio: Tips for City Living

Cleveland native, Zondra Wilson, moved to LA in 2004 to pursue her career as an actor/performer. She’s also the CEO of Blu Skin Care LLC. We talked to her about her hometown, to get a better idea for what the area is like, and help those looking to move there.

Cleveland Staples: Sports, History and More!

According to Wilson, The Flats in Cleveland is just “magnetic.” She says, the well-known sports town is much more than that.

“I’ve visited and temporarily lived in many cities like Orlando, Detroit and now Los Angeles. Every city has a Browns Club…and there is nothing like a true Cleveland sports fan,” says Wilson.

“So many legendary celebrities were born in Cleveland or in the surrounding area. The list includes, but isn’t limited to: Dorothy Dandridge, Bob Hope, Halley Berry, Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin LaWanda Page, Steve Harvey, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Brown, Marilyn Manson, Jim Backus, Rita Dove, Debra Winger; the list goes on and on,” explains Wilson.

And when moving to the Cleveland area, Wilson reminds us of a few important things when it comes to city living.

  • Bring a diverse wardrobe. The city has four varied seasons with a wide range of temperatures. It can be 80 degrees one day and 40 degrees the very next day.
  • Navigation is fairly simple in Cleveland– numbered streets run north to south and named avenues run east to west. Traffic is also not terribly congested for a major city, so owning a car is completely feasible.
  • But, don’t get caught downtown when there is a baseball and basketball or basketball and football game going on at the same time. The traffic is horrendous.
  • Rent averages between $500 -$700 for a one bedroom apartment

Other Tips for Moving

“I always tell people to shop at the 99-cent store. You can get many of the same items that your local pharmacy or grocery store sells for three times the price,” explains Wilson.

And Wilson says that Cleveland is definitely a blue-collar town, so you shouldn’t expect too much Glamour, but be ready for a fun time, regardless.

“We have one of the best amusement parks in the world. Cedar Point is located in Sandusky, OH about an hours drive from the city. We are a two hours drive away from Detroit, five hours drive away from Chicago and an eight hours drive from NYC. So, you can take a quick weekend get-a-way with the family,” says Wilson.

And to close, Wilson talks a bit more about Cleveland weather, which can be very tricky if you’re relocating there from a different side of the US or other area.

“Just keep in mind that the weather changes drastically and quickly. Keep warm clothes at all times,” says Wilson.
