You may not think of storage units as a popular setting for a Hollywood film (unless it’s a horror movie and someone is about to suffer a terrible fate)… ahem, regardless of the theme of the show or movie, storage units have actually become a lot more popular on tv in the last few years.
Stan Lexow, Manager of American Self Storage Ocala, shares his thoughts on some popular shows and movies featuring storage units.
Storage Units on TV
As we mentioned before, storage units in television are sometimes shown as places you shouldn’t frequent at night. Maybe a criminal needs to use it for something illegal. Well, according to Lexow, Breaking Bad is not the exception in this category.
“Technically it was [rented] to stow away millions of dollars in cash, but I digress. This is definitely one of the most memorable shows that uses a self storage unit!” says Lexow.
This show was centered around Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a blood spatter pattern analyst for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department. Dexter also had a secret life as a serial killer, hunting down murderers who needed punishment and had managed to get away with their crimes.
“Another great series that came to and end…the “Tooth Fairy” killer utilized a self storage unit to hold his treasures – teeth from his victims,” says Lexow.
This reality show is a series that features storage unit auctions (when rent is not paid on a storage locker for three months in California, the contents can be sold by an auctioneer as a single lot of items in the form of a cash-only auction) people fight for the “treasures” that may be inside these units, sight unseen.
Lexow shares what he thinks about this reality show.
“Shows like “Storage Wars” feature situations that are very rare. Often, items found in storage unit auctions are of little-to-no value and hardly ever turn a profit,” Lexow says.
Storage Units Films
When it comes to movies, there aren’t that many that focus mainly around storage units, but we found at least one.
A 2013 horror film called “Self Storage.” This movie was about a killer who used a self storage unit to commit his crimes.
An anonymous writer on IMDB describes the plot this way:
There couldn’t be a better location: removed, no people, nothing but party… right? We soon learn that some things were meant to stay under lock and key and certain places were supposed to be left undisturbed. The kids aren’t the only ones at the self storage facility who are looking for a night of fun.
Okay, we will watch at our own risk.
To close, Lexow emphasizes that it’s important to remember that even on reality shows like Storage War$ some situations are not 100% real.
“Units featured on these types of shows are typically staged – storage units that go into auction are not as clean… Auctioneers are depicted to be very crass on these shows, which is not the case at true storage auctions. You want your customers to be happy and feel respected!” says Lexow.
Regardless of the theme, our faithful friends: the good ol’ storage units, are most likely to continue to make appearances in showbiz because, they’re simply multi-faceted and–well, just awesome.
