Indianapolis is one of the largest cities in the United States and is the capital city of Indiana. It is also one of the fastest growing metro areas in the U.S. which means there is plenty to do for those looking for a place to visit.

Indy has continuously ranked as one of the best downtowns in the U.S. because the city has over 200 retail shops, more than 30 hotels, 300 restaurants, several movie theaters, sports venues, museums, art galleries and parks. In addition, there is the annual Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and NCAA Basketball tournament games. With all of these options, there is no shortage of things to do in the city.

If you want to plan a trip to Indy, the best time to do so is most likely in the summer when the city is bustling. The winter months can get quite cold so walking around outside is more of a burden than anything. The city is full of rich, cultural heritage and has several districts designated as such. The districts are being revitalized in order to bring more tourists into the area. The Cultural Trail is an urban bike and pedestrian path which connects the districts and gives a great view of the city, people and restaurants.

Indy is second only to Washington D.C. for the number of war monuments in the city. Some of the more memorable monuments are the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, the USS Indianapolis Memorial and the Medal of Honor Memorial.

If you are in the mood for sports, Indianapolis has it all. It is labeled as the Racing Capital of the World as well as the Amateur Sports Capital of the World and for good reason. The NCAA headquarters are in the city, there are 3 NCAA Conferences in the city, 2 professional teams, countless minor league teams and of course the raceways.

With so much to do in the city there is no wonder tourists are flocking in each year. There are parks and bike trails for the kids as well as restaurants, sports and museums for the adults. Consider stopping in Indianapolis on your next tour through the Midwest.
