Last year started off with a bang for us at Self Storage Finders. At the beginning of the year we released our much anticipated SEO Guide for Storage Operators to much fanfare and appreciation. Sparefoot then released their 2013 Calendar to almost as much fanfare! Of course the year was already rolling for others in the storage industry as Talonvest got 2013 off to a huge start with a $20k donation to a local California Children’s Charity! There was also a $97k driveway dispute which shutdown a local storage operator.
As always, the storage industry continued its charitable ways as the year got rolling. Social media giant, Facebook, made some changes and we asked if your facility still sees value in it…to which the reply was, eh, not really.
Vertical Consultants got 2013 off to a big way in helping many, many storage operators and StorageMart announced their scholarship winners for the upcoming year. Storage Post went crazy and collected nearly 4500 coats for a coat drive and there was all kinds of crazy stuff found in storage units, including $800k in stolen liquor and 167 pounds of weed.
Across the country there were several natural disasters causing havoc to millions of people. Floods, tornados, fires and nasty storms abound. Sparefoot and Uhaul were two of many storage companies continuing to support local communities by offering free storage to those effected.
Somebody said self storage was a bad idea and we followed up with how the storage REITs are crushing everything this year. At the end of this year, Public Storage purchased Stor-All for over $400 million and CubeSmart had a few large acquisitions as well.
Overall, the self storage industry seemed to have a great year. The economy is starting to pick up and storage owners are seeing the benefits. In addition, the storage REITs are eating up many of the smaller mom and pop facilities and even starting to feed on the middle tier storage companies. I think industry consolidation will continue but on a smaller scale, though who knows for sure as of now.
From all of us here, we thank you for a great year and hope to build into an even bigger 2014. Stay safe and Happy Holidays! See you next year.
