Self storage operator A-AAA Key Mini Storage is one of the larger operators in the storage industry as they have storage facilities in nine different states and operate more than 40 facilities total. They are leading by example and are installing solar panels at 9 of their Texas self storage properties.
Why install solar panels you ask? The company will be reducing their costs and the carbon footprint of each storage facility. Once the transformation is completed, the new solar systems are expected to generate 1 million kilowatt hours of electricity for an average expected savings of $93,000 annually. In addition, the combined systems are expected to reduce A-AAA Key Mini Storage’s electricity usage by nearly 55%.
The solar trend has been catching on in the self storage industry as more facilities look to lessen their carbon footprint and cut costs. With the economy looking up and companies more willing to spend some of their cash reserves, it makes sense to spend money now to save money later. Several storage facilities have recently gone “off the grid” and more will continue to do so as they analyze the benefits.
Though it can be a significant up front cost, such as adding solar panels at 9 facilities, the ROI is positive only a few years down the line. What do you think? Is adding solar panels to any of your storage facilities in the cards? Do you think it is a good/bad idea?
