San Francisco has much history spread throughout the city and is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is one of the largest cities in the United States, yet is only the 4th largest in California. The Gold Rush, earthquakes and hippie culture sets the tone for the cityscape and culture in the great city.
Due to the climate and the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco has a relatively mild and cool climate all year round. The cool temperatures make the city great to see on foot. Take a walk down the historic Market Street near the waterfront. From there you can move to the shopping districts and hundreds of restaurants. There are plenty of attractions from Fisherman’s Wharf to Pier 39, AT&T Park and the famous Lombard Street. If you get tired from walking too much, cable cars can carry you the rest of the way.
The city is home to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the most visited parks in the world. The Recreation Area is also home to several former airfields and military bases and of course Alcatraz. There are also more than 220 other parks in the city with the most popular of those being the Golden Gate park.
The city is full of performing arts centers, Opera houses, Ballets and music venues. Some of the most famous music artists have played at the Fillmore including Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix and the Dead. If art, museums and parks are not what you are in the mood for, there are plenty of sporting activities in the city. The San Francisco 49ers and the Giants play in the city as well as several collegiate teams. Other outdoor activities include boating, sailing and windsurfing in addition to several high profile golf courses.
The diversity of the culture and people in San Francisco are what make the city great. Most of the city’s population was born in another state or a different country completely. This leads to great cuisine, great neighborhoods and interesting conversations. One of the largest sections of the city is Chinatown and it also happens to be one of the oldest and largest in North America.
Whether you are in the mood for great food, outdoor activities or a performance, the city of San Francisco has it all. There is no shortage of things to do and places to see so plan accordingly or you will spend a majority of your time attempting to figure out where to go rather than being there.
