With Spring in full swing and summer right around the corner, it is time to stop procrastinating and get that spring cleaning done. It’s not too late and these helpful tips will make your spring cleaning quick, easy and earth friendly with these “Go Green” cleaning tips.
Living Areas and Bedrooms
Most of the entertainment centers, coffee tables and side tables can be wiped down with a rag. Instead of using an old rag this year, try a microfiber dust cloth. Microfiber is better at picking up dust than an old rag and is a green option compared to paper towels you will throw away. In addition, you can simply use a furniture polish to get your wood clean and shiny or you can try making a green furniture polish yourself. Use 3 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for an eco friendly cleaning solution. It will protect your furniture the same but will smell better than regular furniture spray.
To clean your carpets, try another natural stain remover. Use one tablespoon of baking soda, 3 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 cups of water. If you want to use a professional company to clean your carpets, be sure they use a plant based, non toxic solvent which is eco-friendly. If you are cleaning your entire house, you will most likely need to move your furniture around or out of the house completely. Consider renting a self storage unit for a few days while you get your house in order.
Kitchen and Bathrooms
Kitchens and bathrooms are a pain to clean. They are dirtier, greasier and harder to clean than the rest of the rooms in your house. They probably aren’t deep cleaned as often as the rest of your home either. For a green deep clean of these rooms try using the stuff you already have in your pantry – vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and olive oil.
Spray dirty, grimy windows, dusty windows and sticky countertops with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar. This solution even works great on sticky, dirty floors and the vinegar odor quickly fades as it dries. This is a great, green cleaning solution for your dirty kitchens.
Pour undiluted vinegar around the edges of your toilets to remove unsightly rings. Use a paste of baking soda and lemon juice to remove hard water deposits and soap scums on your sinks and showers. For slow running drains, spoon a half cup of the baking powder into the drain, followed by 2 cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes then run the water for about 5 minutes to flush everything out.
By now, your home should be feeling, looking and smelling better than it has in years. Open the curtains and windows to let the fresh air in and make it feel more like Spring. To really get the feel of Spring, invite friends over for a party and let the drinks flow!
