Every day we learn something interesting related to the self storage industry. There are curious cases of embezzlement, stolen liquor, planes flying into storage units and even a father/son robbery duo. Indeed, the self storage sector is a happening and entertaining industry. Most people see self storage as steel boxes you put your extra stuff in but those in the industry know it is much more than that. Aside from the simple steel buildings people typically think of or the craziness those in the industry see on a daily basis, we decided to drop some knowledge on you. We searched the country far and wide to find self storage facilities in the most far reaching places of America.
The Southernmost Storage Facility (Hawaii):
Pahoa Self Storage is the storage facility farthest south in Hawaii. The facility boasts the best security, service, value and community pride while offering 24 hour security and gated access.
As of 2010 the census for Pahoa was a mere 945 people. The city, which name means knife or dagger, also has one of the world’s most active volcano’s.
The Southernmost Storage Facility (in the 49):
Old Town Self Storage in Key West, Florida is the southernmost storage facility in the upper 49. This facility boasts 24 hour security, drive up access and climate controlled storage units.
The facility itself is about 170 miles south of Miami and 105 miles north of Havana, Cuba. Key West is a popular tourist destination year round due to its superb weather. It also has several key military stations in the city, including Key West Naval Air Station.
The Northernmost Storage Facility:
The Northernmost storage facility is Steese Mini Storage located in Fairbanks, Alaska. In addition to storage units the storage facility provides moving services, trailers, trucks and boxes.
Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska behind Anchorage and boasts about 32,000 people living in the city. I found this number surprising because its cold in Alaska, and who wants to live there? Between the cold and snow, forget about it. Kidding aside, the city draws tourists from cruises in the summer and to view the Northern Lights in winter months.
The Easternmost Storage Facility:
Safe Space Storage in Lubec, Maine takes the honor as the Easternmost storage facility in the United States. The facility is small and clean with security lights and fencing. A security gate keeps the facility inside and outside storage units protected.
The town of Lubec is small with a population of 1359 in 2010. West Quoddy Head is the easternmost point in the U.S. and is adjacent to Quoddy Narrows, a strait between Canada and the U.S. Since 1808, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse has guided ships through the waterway.
The Westernmost Storage Facility:
The distinction of the Westernmost storage facility in the United States goes to Lawai Cannery Self Storage in Kalaheo, Hawaii. This facility is owned and operated by Super Space Storage and provides security cameras, drive up access, RV, car and boat parking, 24 hour access and boxes. The facility is well lit and has a manager on-site 24 hours a day.
