Sacramento City Guide
Sacramento, California is not just the regal capital of the state—it also has some great nicknames. So if you’re eager to live in a town called America’s Most Diverse City, River City or Sack o’ Tomatoes, pack those bags (or sacks) pronto! It was thanks to Swiss immigrant John Sutter, Sr. that Sacramento became a city, and it was Spanish cavalry officer Gabriel Moraga who named it after the Sacramento River—so it truly is a diverse place!
Besides the groovy monikers, Sacramento also boasts a pleasant Mediterranean climate, albeit without the crystal blue sea and white-washed buildings, which means that you’re in for a mild, wet winter and a dry, hot summer. With a population of just 485,199, several respected universities, and the world-renowned UC David Medical Center, this capital city has everything you need.
Students who go to school here, including McGeorge School of Law, Epic Bible College, and Hawkins' School of Performing Arts, can stash their extra belongings in one of the numerous self storage facilities in the area.
Be sure to visit the B.F. Hastings Bank Building—besides taking care of your banking needs, you can admire the fact that it used to be the westernmost station of the Pony Express, the first mail service (via actual horseback) in the country. And speaking of history, you can take a tour of all the haunted spots in town, including a series of underground streets, Old City Cemetery, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Central Library.
If scaring yourself half to death is not your thing, the annual Jazz Festival in Old Sacramento is sure to sooth your racing heart, though the Summer Shakespeare Festival in William Land Park may get it thumping again when you realize that you can’t understand Early Modern English. After a long day of fun (or fear), you’ll want to sit down and have a hearty meal, and what better city to enjoy good food than this Farm-to-Fork capital of the country?
Best of all, you’ll never have to worry about where to put all your awesome souvenirs—like your ghost hunting equipment or Elizabethan dresses and nether hose. Sacramento has plenty of storage units available all over town.
